“Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s,
I was afraid of so many things and
experiences, but I was also incredibly curious and
eager to learn every day. I had no exposure to out
queer folks as a kid and had pretty limited views on
sexuality until early adulthood. I also felt really
uncomfortable with many displays of dominant
masculinity and femininity and compulsive
heterosexuality, but I didn’t understand that I had
options until I fell in love with another queer
woman in my mid-20s. When that happened, I
jumped in with both feet, and then so many earlier
parts of my life made more sense. Since that time, I
have grown an incredible LGBTQI+ chosen family
with people who represent the beautifully wide
spectrum of genders and sexualities.
“I am proud that my child already knows there are
so many options for how to be and how to love. I
want all young people to trust their guts, to listen
to their inner selves, to feel courageous in
expressing who they are, and to know that they
have an entire lifetime to grow and to discover and
to change. Ultimately, being queer has brought me
much closer to a sense of freedom and to
immeasurable joy.”
