Protest Procedure
RULE INTERPRETATIONS
Protests involving a misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule will be considered, but judgment
calls will not receive any consideration.
A player, directed by the team captain/coach may request and be granted a time-out for the
purpose of the team captain/coach and the game officials reviewing a decision, which may have
resulted from misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule.
Such requests must be made upon gaining possession or during any dead ball period and must
occur no later than during the first dead ball aer the clock has been properly started following
the play that is to be reviewed. If a period has officially ended, the request must be made before
the next period begins.
When a time-out is granted, the game official will confer with both team captains/coaches in
front of the scorer’s table. The captain/coach will inform the officials that he/she would like to
protest and state specifically the “correctable error” that he/she believes has been made. If the
officials agree a protest is valid, the Director of Officials and the Officials’ Committee Staff
member on that court will be called upon to make a final decision.
If the error is correctable, the error will be corrected and the protesting team will not be
charged a timeout. If the error is not correctable, the protesting team will be charged with a
timeout. NOTE: If a team has no timeouts remaining, the protesting team will be charged with a
technical foul.
All decisions made by the Officials’ Committee will be final.
ELIGIBILITY
Protests concerning player eligibility must be made to the Tournament Staff or game officials
immediately upon discovering there is an eligibility issue.
The Tournament Staff will assume responsibility for investigation of the eligibilty of all
participants upon request.
An ineligible player is any person who does not meet the NIRSA eligibility requirements and/or
whose name and identification number does not appear on the teams roster.
All participants must present a valid picture ID card prior to each game they are scheduled to
play. If an individual in question cannot provide valid identification, then he/she will not be
allowed to particiapte in that particular game.
Any person participating in the tournament found to be ineligible will be suspended from the
tournament.
Any team using an ineligible player shall forfeit ALL games in which the ineligible player
participated. NOTE: If this occurs during pool play, teams that may have lost to the said team
will be awarded a win. If this occurs during single-elimination play, teams that have already been
eliminated will not advance in the tournament.
A player competing under an assumed name and his/her team will be suspended from the
tournament for the remainder of the tournament.
All teams using ineligible players will be reported to their respective institutions and NIRSA.
Pool Play Tie-Breaker Procedure
The Championship Playoffs are determined by the following criteria:
Teams will be placed in three-team or four-team pools. Each team will be scheduled for 2 pool play
games.
The top 2 teams from each three-team pool will advance to the single-elimination Championship
Playoffs. The top 3 teams from each four-team pool will advance to the single-elimination
Championship Playoffs. NOTE: Mercy rule will be in effect during pool play and all subsequent
games.
Tie-Breaker for 4-Team Pools
1. One team will have a record of 2-0 and will be the team that finishes first in the pool.
2. There will be a two-way tie between two teams with records of 1-1.
A. The team that won the first game will finish second in the pool.
B. The team that lost the first game will finish third in the pool.
Tie-Breaker for 3-Team Pools
1. If a three-way tie exists, it will be decided as follows:
A. Forfeit - A team that forfeits is dropped to the lowest possible play among the three tied
teams.
B. The difference between total points scored versus total points allowed (point differential)
will determine the order of finish.
For example: A defeated B, 7-0; B defeated C, 7-6; and C defeated A, 13-6.
Team A Team B Team C
7 0 0 7 6 7
6 13 7 6 13 6
13 13 7 13 19 13
Diff = 0 Diff = -6 Diff = +6
Thus Team C finishes in first place, Team A finishes in second place, and Team B does not
qualify.
C. If two teams have the same point differential, then who beat whom in head-to-head
competition will determine playoff placement.
D. If all three teams have the same point differential, then the total points scored will
determine playoff placement.
E. If two teams have scored the same number of points, then who beat whom in head-to-head
competition will determine the playoff placement.
F. If all three or four teams have scored the same number of points, then the fewest points
allowed will determine the playoff placement.
G. If two teams have allowed the same number of points, then who beat whom in head-to-head
competition will determine playoff placement.
